Extreme Home Makeover
How Exactly Do They Do It?

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, often referred to as "Extreme Home Makeover" by fans, on ABC is a show that has changed the lives of thousands of people. Ty Pennington and his crew don’t just build houses for families, they give hope, and they inspire the volunteers who help build the house to do what they can for their community and make their world a better place.

The show started in 2003 and, since then, has become more popular than the show that inspired it: Extreme Makeover. Ty, formerly a carpenter of Trading Spaces, is the host of the show, and often provides comedic relief in the show with his enthusiastic personality, high-energy antics, and obsession with keeping his "secret project" from sight. He starts the show by telling the audience where the family for that week is and one of the famous lines from the show: "The renovation starts now!"

In the sixth season, 2008-2009, the show is highlighting the "everyday hero" each week. These are families that give back to their communities despite having difficulties of their own, and work to make their world a better place in any way they can.

Extreme home makeover describes the show well since the original house is torn down and rebuilt from the foundation up. As they build, incorporating passions and interests of the family members into the rooms, the crew helps the family save energy and live in an eco-friendly home by using energy-efficient lighting and heating, and even recycled materials in the house.

In the beginning of the show, the focus seemed to be on the crew and the chemistry between the members of the crew and the contractor. However, since then, the focus has shifted to the families being helped. In some cases, the extreme home makeover is taken beyond the family's home to doing work for the community and charity organizations.

In a recent episode, for example, a family who adopted children from Haiti was surprised when Hasbro, Playskool, and members of the community donated clothing, toys, and school supplies to be taken to children in Haiti in the family's name. In other episodes in which family members have life-threatening illnesses, companies, such as CVS, help with medical bills or supplies, pay off the family's mortgage, or provide a college scholarship for the children.

To further the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition concept, the crew and volunteers build the new home in just one week while the family is away on vacation, and though there have been some very close calls, and even a little stalling, the house gets done in seven days, from demolition to final touches. When the family returns from vacation, they're surrounded by family, friends, and community members, and their new home is revealed when Ty leads them in another famous line: "Move that bus!" The family gets to explore their new home, room by room, and Ty reveals his "secret project" to the family. And, as the family begins to realize that the extreme home makeover is not just a dream, and they'll get to wake up in their beautiful new home the next morning, Ty ends the show with the final famous line: "Welcome home, family! Welcome home!"
